Business & Investments

Foreign investment is actively being sought by Malta and the government has introduced various incentives for companies considering manufacturing on the islands, including tax exemptions and subsidized factory rents. During the 1990s, the island updated its infrastructure and major investments were made in the overhauling of the island’s communications system, the construction of a power station, new airport terminal and upgrading hotels.

There are no rigid rules of formality though the normal social courtesies, the right dress and forms of address, will go a long way. The Maltese shake hands on meeting and parting. Business cards are always appreciated. Reasonably smart dress is expected for business. If in doubt err on the conservative side. Men should wear a suit or jacket and tie; women should appear elegant, though this does not necessarily mean going as far wearing a conventional suit.

Business visits often involve the exchange of small gifts (and the greasing of palms is not unknown). If you are invited to a private home, take something like flowers, chocolates or a bottle of wine. Refusing hospitality from a Maltese, whether a drink or home made dessert at the end of a Maltese meal, is likely to cause offence.
