With Malta being a small country though, there isn’t a huge selection of LGBT specific venues, but there is a small but thriving gay community made up of both Maltese and foreign residents. With Malta being a popular tourist destination, there is a wide selection of clubs and bars in the Paceville & St Julians area, but only a few cater specifically to gay customers and their friends.

The oldest gay bar in Malta is Tom bar in Floriana, a suburb of Valletta. Situated on Crucifix Hill, the bar has recently been refurbished and has two floors.

Upstairs, you’ll find “P-Lounge”, a chilled-out, laid back vibe with cool, mellow tunes played on the sound system, ideal for kicking back and sharing a drink with friends. Downstairs is louder, with a dance floor and DJ (there is a house DJ at Tom Bar). Such gay bars are open nightly from 8.30pm.

In the heart of Malta’s party district, Klozet club is a pumping venue open for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities on Fridays and Saturdays from 10.00pm. Popular with a young crowd wanting to party hard. Nearby is the Adam and Eve Hotel, Malta’s only gay hotel which has a popular bar and Oriental Patio. The bar is open to non-residents.

A place with a difference is the O Bar and Spa situated in the heart of Paceville in St Georges Bay. Strictly men-only, the bar is open from 10.00 pm on Friday and Saturdays, and in addition to the bar, there’s also a men-only sauna. Another place to check out is Saints Bar in Hamrun, which is popular with local transvestites.

Historically, when the British forces were based here, Valletta’s Strait Street was a hive of activity for strip clubs and other adult activities – it was world-renowned back then. Today, the venue has changed and has been somewhat upgraded, and a number of adult clubs are found mainly in Paceville, but there are also some popular clubs further out in Bugibba and Sliema. These clubs generally are free to enter, serve drinks and have a strict age restriction – adults only.

These venues are popular with men – and their friends – who want to see semi or fully naked women dance for them privately or for groups of friends. Stag parties are well catered-for, and these bars attract a wide clientele; both Maltese and foreigners/holidaymakers alike. Doormen check credentials upon entry and no underage clients or troublemakers are allowed in.

The most popular gentlemen’s club is “Steam”. Based in St George’s Road, St. Julians, the club is really popular with a younger, affluent crowd and it’s not uncommon to see tables of young men buying champagne whilst watching the dancers. Another similar venue is AO-Platinum, in Elia Zammit Street, Paceville. Nearby, you can also find The VIP Gentleman’s Club in Ball Street, Paceville. Outside the St. Julians area, Bugibba has a few lap-dancing clubs including Rouge in Kavvetta Street, and Secrets in Pioneer Road. Sliema is home to The Blue Moon Club in Ghar Lembi Street.

Generally, you can get a basic lap-dance for €20. A topless dance is around €40 and a completely nude strip is around €70. Many of the dancers are from Eastern Europe and are in their early 20’s, although there are some local women who get involved. These clubs are generally luxurious and not at all seedy, and they are advertised locally as well as in the major magazines and inflight publications. For more info, contact each club for opening times etc.

Isle of MTV is a club tour culminating in a live show for up to several thousand people held outdoors at The Granaries, Floriana, just by the entrance to the capital city, Valletta. It’s THE event of the summer, with many non-Maltese flying in from abroad especially for the concert. The show is completely free and the audience is encouraged to use public transport to get to and from the event.

The 2007 show was on the 26th July and included live performances from Akon, Maroon 5 and Enrique Iglesias, with Ira Losco representing local Maltese talent.

The 2008 event brought The Kooks, OneRepublic, N*E*R*D, Lady Gaga and Enrique Iglesias to the island for an even bigger concert than that held the previous year.

In 2009, the Isle of MTV concert was held on 8th July and The Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, Metro Station and Esmée Denters headlined. Over 50,000 people watched the concert live at the venue.

Now in its fourth consecutive year, the 2010 event has been confirmed for Wednesday 30th June and will be staged, once again, in Floriana. The line-up has yet to be confirmed, but Malta is buzzing with rumours about who’ll be taking part.

The Isle of MTV concert is broadcast as an hour-long special across Europe on MTV. Held in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority, free tickets are available . This sort of publicity for the country is opening up Malta as a hot destination for a younger audience who want to party in the Mediterranean heat. In the week running up to the concert club nights and beach parties are held as part of Malta Music Week, with top International DJs, such as Roger Sanchez, taking over the decks.

MTV is available in Malta on both Go and Melita’s channel line-up. For premium subscribers, there are a total of 5 MTV channels: MTV, MTV Two, MTV Hits, MTV Dance and MTV Music.

Updated 13th May 2010 – This year’s line-up include Kelis, Kid Rock, Scissors Sisters and another great artist who is yet to be announced.

Swinging was considered part of the sexual revolution that took place in the 1960s and 1970s, although its origins took root in ancient times.

One writer, Terry Gould, claims that swinging started during World War 2, when it became popular with US Air Force pilots and their respective wives.

However, it was unusual for Air Force wives to accompany their husbands on tours of duty, and other sources claim that the original participants were those posted to the California Desert, beginning in military communities in the 1950s, before gaining popularity in suburban society. In a Rome, group sex and orgies were depicted in mosaics and artwork of the time, so “swinging” was indeed popular in early European society.

Swinging is generally an organised activity, with over 3,000 clubs and organizations existing worldwide; over 1,000 of which have an online presence. Most European cities have at least one swinging club, although they aren’t really publicised amongst the general community. You have to be “in the know” and be introduced by a friend or associate, or sign-up to a website.

In Malta, with the country having an outwardly-conservative society, there are no publicly advertised swingers clubs per se. In the past, when a lot of military were based on the island, Strait Street in Valletta could well have provided an opportunity to take part in more adventurous sexual activity, but today, the scene is more underground. An online search gives the details of several sites with the details of swinging couples and groups – rather than clubs – in Malta. One site mentions “Couples (both bi and straight) and bi-females most welcome.” Single males, however, are generally discouraged from joining in with the activities. Obviously, safe-sex is important, and anyone partaking in such activity is implored to practice this by the couples taking part.

That’s the impression the advertisements portray, and for many, that’s what Malta represents.

However, delve a little deeper, and you will come across a thriving local music scene, with a variety of genres; a couple of the most popular being death and heavy metal. Malta has hosted it’s own Extreme Metal Festivals with a good number of local bands taking part, and these events have been attended by both local and international fans.

Doom metal fans in May last year, attended the Malta Doom Metal Festival at Poxx bar, Paceville. Other bars that feature some of the best heavy metal bands in Malta are Rookies and Remedy.

Several bands from Malta have featured in overseas festivals and have toured extensively, and one thing that seems to stand out with the Maltese bands is the quality and artistry, with excellent reviews in the media. One of these bands is Forsaken, formed back in the early 1990s. Their albums, Dominaeon, Evermore and Anima Mundi were released on cd and vinyl and were very well-received in Germany, UK, USA and The Netherlands. Their most recent album “After the Fall” was released on April 1st 2009, this is Forsaken’s first collaboration with I Hate Records based in Sweden. They also took part in the Martial Arts vs Rock Bands festival in Floriana, Malta in January 2010.

Another local heavy metal band experiencing success internationally is Loathe, who have toured the UK over the past few years, playing venues in London, Birmingham, Manchester and other cities. In 2009, Loathe recorded their first album, Despondent by Design, to be released in 2010. Loathe have played on the same bill as SLIT, Sabbat, Let ‘Em Bürn, SLAB and Detonation.

Knockturn Alley is another popular Maltese metal band who, in 2009, toured Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and played their closing date in Finland, whist promoting their album Medusa. Knockturn Alley was formed in 2004 and has a good-sized following on Facebook too.

There are several other heavy metal bands involved in the local scene such as Dark Quarterer, Seismic, Nomad Son and Deluge of Sorrow. The next Metal event in Malta is the Pre-Valentine Massacre on 9th February 2010 featuring Loathe, Knockturn Alley and Seismic at Remedy Club, Paceville.

Maltese wines have improved substantially over recent years, and this has led to a good number of wine bars opening across the island in order to satisfy the demand from both tourists and locals alike. Here we take a trip to few and tell you a bit about each.

Trabuxu, Strait Street, Valletta

Situated in an infamous narrow street once known as “The Gut” amongst British servicemen stationed on Malta, Trabuxu is a hidden gem in Valletta. Valletta used to be quiet at night, but increasingly, venues are opening and nightlife is returning to Malta’s capital.

As well as a good selection of local and foreign wines, some available by the glass, you can satisfy your appetite with one of the dishes on the menu, which changes regularly and focuses on local, fresh ingredients. The wine bar has vaulted ceilings and is very friendly and welcoming.

Omerta, Old Bakery Street, Valletta

Situated towards the far end of Old Bakery Street is Omerta, a small wine bar and trattoria that’s oozing with character. There are one or two tables on the pavement for hot summer evenings, and winter, the interior is cosy and warm. The walls are adorned with an exhibition of ambient black and white photos by local photographer, Reuben Chircop and these really give the place a sense of history. The menu has an Italian influence and a particular highlight is the Maltese platter, with homemade bigilla, Maltese sausage cooked in wine, local goat’s cheese and sundried tomatoes. Wines are really well priced and available by the glass, half and full bottle.

Del Borgo, St Domenic Street, Birgu

Siuated in the heart of Birgu, Malta’s one-time home of the Knights of St John prior to the construction of Valletta, Del Borgo is a mix of 21st century interior design and typically Maltese, traditional limestone and wood architecture. There is a wide selection of red, white and rose, some available by the glass, and the wine list has a useful description of each wine’s character. The food menu is a selection of Mediterranean specialities, bar snacks, platters and finger foods, and handily, the menu recommends wines to accompany each dish.

D’Vine, Main Street, Mellieha

In the north of Malta, there’s a new wine bar opened by local, well-established restaurateur Joseph Vella and his team. Launched in 2008, d-Vine is a small wine bar with a modern “lounge” interior, with effective lighting creating a sophisticated vibe. There’s an excellent selection of new-world wines and champagnes, as well as a range of beers and spirits that are set out along a wall creating a real statement. Food is Mediterranean with a twist, and ranges from bar snacks to gourmet platters and bistro-style favourites.

This is just a small selection of wine bars in Malta, and there are many more to be discovered.
