Situated majestically on top of the Selmun promontory, the Selmun Castle is one of the last few remaining baroque buildings in Malta which really deserve care and attention. It was built by the Knights of Malta, under the stewardship of Grand Master Manoel de Rohan relatively late in their Maltese reign, in 1783 and was for a time used as a noble residence and a hunting lodge. Undoubtedly the vast grounds around the castle as well as the imposing views which could be accessed from its windows and ramparts were (and still are) highly desirable for any resident.

Wild Camping in Malta
Getting away from it all is quite difficult on a small island the size of Malta, boasting one of the highest population densities in the world. With a Mediterranean climate, outdoor activities are enjoyed by many – locals and tourists alike. Getting off the beaten track is possible in Malta, and camping in the wild is one way to do it.
There are several popular locations throughout Malta and Gozo, but facilities are few and far between, so if you’re going camping, it’s best to be prepared.
Rock Climbing Malta
Being a rocky island, Malta lends itself perfectly to climbing and bouldering. Climbing is a popular outdoor activity, especially outside of the hot, dry summer months, and there are around 1300 climbs in 30 different locations. By far the area with the most climbs is the South-West coast along the Dingli Cliffs. With such a variety to choose from, Trad Climbing, Bouldering, Deep Water Soloing and Single/Multi-pitch Climbs are available depending on location. Dedicated Sport Climbing is limited to the area around Wied Bibu, although some smaller crags are suited to this elsewhere.
Ice Skating in Malta
It has been suggested that the earliest ice skating happened in southern Finland 4000 years ago, using flattened bone strapped to the bottom of the feet. Skaters merely glided on top of ice until steel blades where invented by the Dutch in the 13th century.
The pastime became so popular in Europe that Emperor Rudolf II of the Roman Empire had an ice carnival constructed in his court for all to enjoy. Interestingly, the construction of modern ice skates has remained fundamentally the same: right into the 21st century.
