Malta StormsThe transition from summer to winter in Malta brings with it some spectacular thunderstorms that transform the brown, arid landscape into one that’s bursting with greenery. Such storms generally span the months of September, October and early November and bring to an end the long, dry season. They can also occur in the spring when the wet winter gives way to the hot, dry summer.

These storms are generally characterised by gale-force winds and torrential rain, amidst sheet and bolt lightning and the rumble of thunder overhead.

Weather in MaltaSeptember in Malta marks the month of change when the exhausting heat of summer makes way for cooler temperatures – a respite to many Maltese who, by now, have grown tired of the high temperatures and humidity which have been endured since June.

Although the heat and lack of rainfall are a big attraction for beach-going tourists during June, July and August, September brings slightly lower temperatures which make the climate less harsh and much more comfortable.

Relaxing on the beach in JuneJune in Malta marks the official start of summer, with hot, sunny days melting into warm evenings; ideal for al-fresco dining in a restaurant or cafe by the sea. By the beginning of June, the spring rains have normally subsided and the month marks the start of the dry season. In the Mediterranean region the summers are hot and generally, there is very little rainfall between now and the end of August.

In Malta, tourists from overseas start flocking to the island for a holiday in the sun, and hotels and resorts start to bustle with activity.

Weather in Malta in AprilEvery year, tourists flock to Malta for Easter, many expecting a Mediterranean holiday in the sun, but at this time of year, the weather can be unpredictable with a run of warm, sunny days often interrupted with strong winds and showers. With Easter falling in March or April, early Spring can bring average daytime temperatures of between 17-19C, with lows of around 10-12C at night, but exceptions are likely. In 2010, the highest temperature recorded to date was in February when the thermometer touched 24C, so this Easter may be slightly warmer than normal.

Weather in Malta in January

Malta Weather in January & Kite SurfingBeing a winter month, January’s weather in Malta can be a real mix of sunshine, cloud, rain and some strong winds. Strong winds usually blow for two to three days at a time, and can feel bitingly cold, especially on cloudy days and at night. Sometimes these winds can be harsh and can reach force 7 or 8. When rain falls, however, it’s not often for the whole day, usually falling in showers in either the morning or afternoon. Although a Mediterranean country, don’t expect sunbathing conditions if you visit in January; the conditions though, are ideal for walking, sightseeing or an activity holiday, as on most days, the sun will make an appearance at some point, averaging 5.5 hours per day.
