June in Malta marks the official start of summer, with hot, sunny days melting into warm evenings; ideal for al-fresco dining in a restaurant or cafe by the sea. By the beginning of June, the spring rains have normally subsided and the month marks the start of the dry season. In the Mediterranean region the summers are hot and generally, there is very little rainfall between now and the end of August.

In Malta, tourists from overseas start flocking to the island for a holiday in the sun, and hotels and resorts start to bustle with activity.

Average daytime temperatures are around 25C, but can be much warmer often hitting 32C in the afternoon. Average night time temperatures are around the 18-19C mark. Some days can be rather windy and when there is a breeze the evenings can be cooler than normal. It’s advisable to bring summer clothing such as t-shirts, shorts and swimwear, but pack a light jacket or woolen jersey to wear on cooler evenings. Rainfall is rare, but it may be worth bringing an umbrella just in case. Throughout June there’s a daily average of over 11 hours of sunshine. The highest recorded June temperature in Malta was 40.1C, and in 2009, the highest temperature for the month was 32C on the 10th.

Being a small island surrounded by the sea, humidity starts to creep up in June and by the end of the month, it can feel quite unbearable sitting in the sun for long periods without cooling off in the sea or in a pool. Sea temperatures at this time of year are around 21C, so swimming is very pleasant in the clear blue waters that surround Malta. Diving, snorkeling, and boating are all popular in summer, and June sees the start-up of many of the boat trips that sail around the islands throughout the summer months.

Every year, tourists flock to Malta for Easter, many expecting a Mediterranean holiday in the sun, but at this time of year, the weather can be unpredictable with a run of warm, sunny days often interrupted with strong winds and showers. With Easter falling in March or April, early Spring can bring average daytime temperatures of between 17-19C, with lows of around 10-12C at night, but exceptions are likely. In 2010, the highest temperature recorded to date was in February when the thermometer touched 24C, so this Easter may be slightly warmer than normal.

The past winter has been fairly dry, but visitors should pack an umbrella just in case of rain this Easter; nevertheless March and April average 5-7 hours of sunshine per day. The weather at Easter lends itself to outdoor activities such as walking and cycling, with temperatures not yet too hot to see the islands on foot. At Easter time, the islands are at their best, with a riot of colour from spring flowers, such as orchids and poppies, in bloom along country lanes, hillsides and fields. The Comino ferry service at Marfa starts up again in Spring, and this is a great opportunity to visit this tranquil island before the hordes of tourists arrive to soak up the sun and swim in the in The Blue Lagoon.

Sea temperatures at Easter are still on the low side, and at around 15-16C are still a bit too cold for most people to brave a dip, although on warmer days a few people can be seen swimming at popular beaches such as Golden Bay and Mellieha. With some of the clearest seas in the Mediterranean, diving is a popular activity all year round. Being a small island, Malta can be subject to some strong winds and these are typically from the North-West. Winds from the South often bring warmer weather to Malta, and occur fairly regularly in the spring. All in all, the Easter climate can bring the unexpected so prepare for any eventuality by packing clothes for a variety of weather conditions.

Being a winter month, January’s weather in Malta can be a real mix of sunshine, cloud, rain and some strong winds. Strong winds usually blow for two to three days at a time, and can feel bitingly cold, especially on cloudy days and at night. Sometimes these winds can be harsh and can reach force 7 or 8. When rain falls, however, it’s not often for the whole day, usually falling in showers in either the morning or afternoon. Although a Mediterranean country, don’t expect sunbathing conditions if you visit in January; the conditions though, are ideal for walking, sightseeing or an activity holiday, as on most days, the sun will make an appearance at some point, averaging 5.5 hours per day.

Daytime temperatures average 15 degrees Centigrade, with a daytime temperature of 18°C considered warm and 11°C considered cold. Night-time temperatures average 9°C with 5°C classified as unusually cold. Together with November and December, January is one of the wettest months in the Mediterranean and Malta is no exception, with an average of 95 mm falling during the month. January however, feels much colder than December and there is a Maltese saying, “Qabel il-Milied, la bard u lanqas ksieh” which roughly translates as “There’s no cold before Christmas”.

January and February are usually the coldest months of the year in Malta. Up until 2008, the coldest day on record was on 31st January 1999 with a maximum temperature of 8.5°C. This record was broken in 2008, when temperatures only reached 7.9°C at the Balzan weather station, with other localities recording temperatures as low as 6 or 7°C. Compared to Northern Europe though, Malta in January is much warmer, and temperatures never fall below freezing, so snow never falls on the islands.

The sea has a surface temperature in January of around 15°C, so diving is still possible on calmer days. One activity that is becoming more popular is kite-surfing, and breezy days are ideal for lovers of the winter sport to take to the blue waters of Mellieha Bay. The sea though, can get rough in January and care should be taken at all times if indulging in such activities.

Malta has a typically Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and cool, wetter winters. In comparison to northern Europe, the climate is much milder in Winter, and December in Malta can be quite pleasant averaging 5 hours of sunshine per day.

Typical daytime temperatures in December are from 15-20C, so many people are still in t-shirts on sunny days. There should be some lengthy sunny spells, however it can rain so pack an umbrella. After sundown, which is at around 5pm in winter, temperatures can drop to around 10-12C, so pack trousers, socks and knitwear for the evenings.

Temperatures never fall below 0C, so there isn’t any frost, ice or snow to contend with. Being an island, Malta can be humid so it can feel quite chilly – even more so when there’s a strong wind blowing. Winter winds can blow for up to 3 days, and the prevailing wind is usually from the north-west, although a north-easterly wind can bring cold and unsettled weather. The wind can gust and be gale force at times, and this means that the sea can be rather rough – so check the weather forecast before you plan a trip to Gozo. Most of Malta’s rain falls from September to April, with thunderstorms normal in September, October and November. The sea is still quite warm in winter, with December’s sea temperatures averaging 17-18C, so scuba diving is possible even at Christmas.

Walking holidays are popular in winter in Malta, and the fields are a lot greener than in summer, so the landscape can be quite breathtaking with some wild flowers here and there. Many of the hotels have indoor pools and spa services, so holidaymakers can still get a feeling of having had a sunshine break before returning home.

Throughout December, festive lights adorn village squares and homes display cribs (Presepju in Maltese) in their windows for passers-by to see. Local schools stage nativity plays and there are concerts and shows throughout the islands during the run-up to Christmas; in Valletta there is even a pantomime. On Christmas day itself, there are religious processions in the villages, and many hotels serve a celebratory Christmas dinner. Many Maltese and tourists alike take a well earned break in December, and Malta has something to offer everyone at this time of year.
