Spending Christmas in Malta
Spending Christmas in Malta is popular, especially for those from the north of Europe. Many tourists come to Malta’s shores for the festive season and most hotels are open all year round. The weather can be very pleasant and sunny at this time of year, with temperatures up to 20C, but it can also rain from time to time. Malta is predominantly Catholic, so Christmas is an important religious occasion and Maltese families celebrate wholeheartedly.
One popular activity on the evenings running up to Christmas is to walk around the locality, looking at the cribs (presepju) and decorations.

The University of Malta can trace its roots back to 1592 with the establishment of Collegium Melitense by Papal intervention. Prior to this, the Jesuits were empowered to confer the degrees of Magister Philosophiae and Doctor Divinitatis. This decree specified that other subjects such as Humanities and Grammar should also be taught. The origins of the University’s medical school were founded when Grand Master Cotoner appointed Fra Dr Giuseppe Zammit as lecturer in Anatomy and Surgery at the Sacra Infermeria (The Knights Hospital) in 1676. This is when medical training was formalised in Malta.
Located in Valletta, Malta’s capital city, St. Johns Co-Cathedral was built by the Order of the Knights Hospitaller of St John (known as the Knights of Malta) between 1573 and 1578. Upon claiming victory over the Turks in 1565, The Knights decided to move their headquarters from Birgu (Vittoriosa) to the Sciberras peninsula where they built the city of Valletta – named after the Grand Master during the victory, Jean de la Valette.
Malta has a typically Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and cool, wetter winters. In comparison to northern Europe, the climate is much milder in Winter, and December in Malta can be quite pleasant averaging 5 hours of sunshine per day.
