St Agatha’s Tower Mellieha

St Agatha's (Red Tower) MaltaStanding majestically on Marfa Ridge looking out over Ghadira Bay, St. Agatha’s tower (also known as The Red Tower, due to its colour) casts a dominant yet protective eye over bathers and sun worshipers on the
golden beach below.

Built as a coastal watchtower by The Knights of St. John, the tower was completed in 1649 during the rule of Grand Master Jean Paul Lascaris Castellar. A series of towers similar to this are scattered strategically along the coastline of the Maltese Islands, and were built to act as communication and lookout points by the Knights in order to ward off attacks by the Turkish Fleet and other enemies.

Malta Bargains

Malta Bargains All Year RoundRecession, recession, recession! Aren’t you just sick and tired of hearing about it? That is all we have heard for the past year and a half isn’t it? People losing their jobs, prices shooting up, banks and other organisations going bankrupt and so on. All this has meant that many people have had to cut down on their spending for obvious reasons.

Some people have a natural talent to sniff out a good bargain but for those who don’t be aware that few good places still exist in Malta where one can find a good bargain indeed! I am mostly referring to the open markets one finds scattered all over Malta, some on a daily basis and some on a weekly one.

Mater Dei Hospital Malta

Mater Dei Hospital MaltaAfter much controversy, delays and overspending, Mater Dei hospital finally replaced the old and dodgy St. Luke’s hospital in June 2007 with the last of the personnel having migrated by November of the same year. The cost of the project had been initially predicted to be around 116m Euro, however the end cost reached over half a billion Euro in total.

Malta’s health care is provided for free (well not exactly for free, just from the tax payers money) by the state and over 80% of the Maltese population makes use of it.

Lidl Supermarket

Lidl Supermarket in MaltaStarting off in Germany as a grocery store in 1930’s Lidl is now one of the leading names in European Supermarkets. Their aim is to sell top quality products at the cheapest possible prices while at the same time being environmentally conscious too. In fact all Lidl fish products are MSC Certified, meaning that they do their utmost to protect the worlds marine resources.

Since setting up store in Malta a few years back, five stores have already been opened in different localities: St. Venera, San Gwann, Luqa, Safi and the latest addition in Zejtun.
